A groundbreaking new device is on the horizon to help track crocodiles in Queensland’s waterways. A Cairns-based company, NorthWatch Technologies, is developing a world-first buoy that uses advanced sonar and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect and monitor crocodiles underwater.
Innovation meets public safety
NorthWatch Technologies was recently awarded $100,000 in funding through the Queensland Government’s Private Sector Pathways program to develop its innovative solution. The company’s proposed device, the CDS-1 buoy, aims to provide 24/7, 360-degree monitoring within a 50-meter radius. It will be able to detect crocodiles, assess their size and threat level, and track their movements, even when they are stationary.
This technology is designed to enhance public safety in high-risk areas like boat ramps and swimming spots. Currently, wildlife rangers rely on public reports from the QWildlife app to manage crocodile sightings. The new detection system has the potential to complement the app by identifying crocodiles that are not visible to the human eye, providing critical information to aid in decision-making for wildlife management.
The Queensland Government operates a world-class crocodile management program that focuses on public safety while also conserving the species in its natural habitat. The new buoy is an example of how innovation can support both people and the environment.

The origin of an idea
NorthWatch Technologies Director Peter Jarvis was inspired to create the buoy after seeing a need for better public safety information about crocodiles. He felt that current measures were limited to public signs near waterways and was honoured that the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) believed his system could improve crocodile management.
The prototype buoy will be developed in Cairns over the next eight months. In the meantime, the Queensland Government continues to encourage the public to report all crocodile sightings using the QWildlife app or by calling 1300 130 372.
Private Sector Pathways program
The Private Sector Pathways program is a Queensland government initiative designed to foster innovation and drive economic growth by supporting collaborations between government and industry. This project received a $50,000 contribution enabling NorthWatch Technologies to address this critical industry need.
