Showcasing extended reality (XR) and its potential for government

XR is an umbrella term for all immersive technologies that blend the virtual and “real” worlds or create a fully immersive experience using computer technologies and wearables.

In January, Andrew Hopper Director-General, Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport, hosted an event to showcase XR to Queensland Government leaders in:

  • Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
  • Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning
  • Department of Employment, Small Business and Training
  • Queensland Health
  • Department of Environment and Science
  • Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy
  • Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water

The event allowed attendees to trial some virtual reality and augmented reality technology and get them thinking about how XR can be used within their department to improve training, enhance experiences, and save time and money.

XR is expected to deliver a $1.5 trillion boost to the global economy by 2030 and can be applied to multiple sectors and in various emerging technologies, like artificial intelligence, drones and robotics.

With our department being the state’s leader in innovation, we want to promote XR and other innovative emerging technologies and demonstrate how these technologies are being applied in everyday life and across all portfolios.

The event was held at Real Serious Games in Fortitude Valley who currently run the Queensland XR Hub. Partly funded by Advance Queensland, the Hub helps showcase the world-class talent of immersive technology businesses in Queensland and supports the increased use of XR.
