Researchers are easily matched with clinical trial participants thanks to Clinials

Did you know that up to 80 percent of clinical trials bringing new medications into the world fail because they’re unable to recruit enough clinical trial participants?

Maree Beare wanted to change this statistic, so she founded Clinials – a clinical research participant recruitment platform that helps researchers create life-changing treatments by accelerating participant recruitment and automating eligibility.

We sat down with Maree and chatted to her about her business and journey as a Queensland female founder.

What inspired you to start your business?

I first started on the Clinials journey working on an app called Wanngi. Wanngi is a digital health wallet giving people control over their medical information. I noticed there were still gaps within the health community when my husband applied to a clinical trial for a medical issue. I decided to provide a solution for researchers that would also give choice to people suffering from disease.

What milestones have you reached?

It’s been a whirlwind ride! The first clinical research study customer we signed definitely had the champagne flowing – a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into it. It was one of those moments we knew what we were doing was solving a problem and could actually help people.

What business achievements are you most proud of to date?

Speaking at and having the team fly down to the 2022 ARCS (Association of Regulatory and Clinical Scientists) expo was definitely a highlight. Just before that point we signed a customer with multiple trials which meant we had enough capital to attend the expo. Another really great moment I’m proud of is the developer team cracking AI (artificial intelligence)-created plain language summaries. It was a journey!

What’s your advice for other female entrepreneurs and businesses starting out on their entrepreneurship journey?

The challenges of implementing innovation and starting a new business can be difficult, but they aren’t impossible. Along the way you will find many people who don’t see your vision, or who think your idea is crazy – ignore these people!
