GIS People

Bringing Geo-spatial products and services to the world, GIS people have put themselves squarely on the map as leaders in their field.

Their flagship product, Gruntify, is a real-time and from the field incident capturing, reporting and job allocation system. Through an app based interface users can snap and tap to submit a photo, their location and more to the product. Once submitted, it can be managed, actioned and reported on from within the product.

Watch to see how Gruntify works.

Gruntify was developed through the Innovation Hub Pilot Project run by the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation in partnership with PwC and various Queensland Government agencies.

Through that initiative, GIS People worked closely with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to develop a solution for graffiti identification and remediation. In 2015 TMR purchased the Gruntify solution.

Gruntify has been further developed and tailored into a platform to support many industries and purposes. It’s now used in handling disaster planning response, asset management and environmental health risks.

Gruntify is being exported and used around the world – recognised recently at the Queensland Spatial Excellence Awards with GIS People winning the Export Award for Gruntify.

More of the story

Innovation, adaptation and collaboration are key to the success of GIS People. As early to market specialists in geospatial solutions, GIS People faced the challenges of being a small player in an industry where many potential clients were not aware of the value of the service available to them.

To address this, GIS People brought International GIS Day to Brisbane in 2013 and 2014, the latter featuring over 30 exhibitors and 2000 attendees. The event raised awareness of GIS in Brisbane and the benefits of mapping technology to local companies and communities. The team also took part in the Open Innovation Challenge, gaining exposure of Gruntify to a new audience of potential clients.

Like many small businesses, GIS People also faced the challenge posed by the unstable financial climate. They overcame this by focusing on developing contacts and leads in organisations both across south-east Queensland, nationally and, most recently, internationally. By sharing their product with key contacts the company’s reputation strengthened. This word-of-mouth, in turn, increased demand for their services and quickly translated into a steady stream of clients.

In 2013 GIS People was rewarded for its business success when it was ranked “6th fastest growing SME in Australia” at the Smart50 awards. GIS People founder Igor Stjepanovic was awarded the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2014 and, in the same year, GIS People also won the title of Small Business Awards IT Champion.
