Regional Queensland is fertile ground for innovation

With a strong innovation and entrepreneurial culture, regional Queensland startups are pioneering new technologies and developing innovative solutions to help grow the regional economy.

The Regional Queensland Startup Ecosystem Report (PDF, 2.5MB) estimates there are currently more than 80 startups in our regions, employing approximately 450 people. A wide range of markets are evident in these startups, with clusters emerging in agriculture, tourism and professional services. Since January 2010, these startups have raised $10.4 million in funds.

Startups in Agricultural Technology in particular are emerging as a key strength, and there is an opportunity for regional Queensland to drive the development of an innovation ecosystem and entrepreneurial economy around this sector. Engagement in some of the most innovative new technologies coming to these markets include autonomous vehicles, drones, advanced internet connected sensors and advanced robotics.

The report was a product of collaboration between the Department of Science, Information Technology, and Innovation, Toowoomba Regional Council, Ipswich City Council, Bundaberg Regional Council, Rockhampton Regional Council, Mackay Regional Council, Townsville City Council and the Cairns Regional Council.
