On his first day the league was plagued with governance failures, criminal investigations, and a government intiated commission of inquiry into corruption as a result of actions by former leaders. With a team of volunteers he led a two year effort to bring the organisation back from the brink of failure and get it working again for veterans and their families in need.
Today the RSL in NSW has a refreshed, skills-based board, a professional headquarters, a completely new constitution and structure, and is offering more charitable services to members and the veteran community at a time of critical need. James will reflect on what it took to achieve that transformation: the arduous journey to rebuild trust with members and the public, the constant commuications necessary to build a consensus for deep reform, the strategies behind making the RSL relevant to new generations of veterans, and of course the mistakes made along the way. Most importantly, he will reflect on how to focus on the core aspects of culture that are critical to an organisation and its purpose in the midst of sweeping change.
