Advance Queensland is proud to support a collaborative project focused on developing innovative building solutions to improve bushfire resilience and sustainability in Queensland. This project, receiving $962,962 in funding, draws together industry leaders Brickworks Building Products Pty Ltd and GreenTech Cement Ltd with the research expertise of University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology.

The project aims to develop lightweight, fire-resistant masonry blocks and facades specifically designed to enhance the safety and resilience of Queensland homes and buildings during bushfire events. This will be achieved through the creation of a new type of aerated, low-carbon emission concrete, utilising advanced manufacturing techniques including 3D concrete printing.

Building a Safer, More Sustainable Future for Queensland

The devastating 2019-20 bushfire season highlighted the critical need for fire-resistant building solutions. It is anticipated that climate change fuelled events such as the bushfires will increase in frequency and intensity. This project directly addresses this need by developing cost-effective building materials that can withstand extreme temperatures.

Economic Benefits and Long-Term Impact

Beyond enhanced safety, this project offers significant economic benefits for Queensland. The novel building products developed will not only help to address the current housing backlog of more than 200,000 dwellings but also create new market opportunities for industry partners with the introduction of new and innovative building products.

Innovation for a Brighter Future

The project leverages UniSQ's expertise in aerated concrete technology and incorporates 3D concrete printing for increased productivity combining with the expertise in the wind and fire lab team at QUT. This combination offers a unique solution that is not only cost-effective but also boasts superior fire resistance and insulation capabilities, leading to energy savings for homeowners.

Looking towards the 2032 Olympics

With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, Queensland's construction sector is poised for significant growth. This project's focus on increased productivity through 3D printing technology ensures the participating companies are well-positioned to meet the anticipated surge in demand for building materials.

By supporting this collaborative project, Advance Queensland is fostering innovation and driving positive change for a safer, more sustainable future for Queensland.
