A family-owned Queensland company, on a mission to address one of Australia’s greatest challenges – slowing productivity growth – is unlocking human potential and labour efficiency through the seamless integration of robotics and human capabilities.

Young Guns are partnering with Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Hub Ltd (ARM Hub), to develop a revolutionary AI-powered solution to automate processes in the packing and unpacking of shipping containers. The partnership and development of the AI powered robotics is proudly supported by Advance Queensland through $1.5 million funding from the Industry Research Projects program, and has the potential to transform the logistics industry significantly increasing safety, productivity and efficiency.

Current Challenges in Container Unloading

Young Guns specialise in the packing and unpacking of shipping containers, with a workforce of pallet stackers and forklift drivers. Traditional container unloading methods are often inefficient and pose safety risks to workers. These inefficiencies arise from various challenges, including:

  • Difficult and hazardous working conditions due to extreme temperatures of shipping containers and low visibility
  • Heavy and oddly shaped cargo that can be hard to move
  • Constraints and pressures associated with time criticality
  • Limitations of both manual and existing automated unloading processes.

Addressing Challenges through Robotics

Through this collaboration, Young Guns’ real-world experience and industry knowledge will be combined with ARM Hub's expertise in cutting-edge robotics and automation technologies. By leveraging this experience, this project has the potential to revolutionise the container packing and unpacking process.

The anticipated benefits include:

  • Minimise crew members exposure to safety hazards and decrease their physical workload
  • Enhanced efficiency and accuracy in container packing
  • Improve overall productivity and efficiency in container unloading
  • Optimise supply chain processes to meet the demands of Queensland businesses.

Collaboration for Success

Young Guns working with ARM Hub with the support of Advance Queensland has the potential to not only benefit Young Guns but also make significant contributions to the entire shipping container industry. Ensuring Queensland businesses are more competitive and position the state as a leader in innovative logistics solutions.
