Creator Originals guidelines

Introduction

Creator Originals is a joint initiative of the Queensland Government and YouTube, as part of Create Queensland, to help develop Queensland-based emerging and established entrepreneurial creators build new content, support production costs, attract online audiences and develop a sustainable career as a content producer.

Creator Originals supports successful creators with the development of content of any genre in accordance with YouTube’s community guidelines, and should play to the creator’s strengths and their audience’s expectations.

Content should represent a clear step-up in terms of scaling their commercial ambition and production values.

Two tiers of funding is available for Queensland-based content creators who have YouTube channels and an existing subscriber base:

  • Tier 1—Established Creators (30,000 subscribers or more)
    • Three awards of $30,000 each (ex GST) to assist with project development and production costs to produce 30-50 minutes of creative content for 5 episodes of a minimum of 6 minutes per episode.
    • The 3 Established Creator award winners will receive financial support for a self-led learning trip to Los Angeles (x4 nights). Winners will have access (optional) to a YouTube-led workshop at the flagship YouTube HQ pending availability. Funds to cover this trip are in addition to the $30,000 grant.
  • Tier 2—Emerging Creators (10,000 subscribers or more)
    • Two awards of $10,000 each (ex GST) for emerging creators to fund project development and production costs to produce 30-40 minutes of creative content for 5 episodes of a minimum of 6 minutes per episode.

Application deadlines

  • Applications open 1 February 2017.
  • Applications close 5pm, 18 April 2017.
  • Shortlisting interviews commence from May 2017.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by the end of June 2017.
  • Final content submitted for review by 31 October 2017.
  • Established Creators to travel to Los Angeles by 31 December 2017.

Production support

Successful applicants are encouraged to use a portion of their award (minimum 20% of total grant funding) to access an optional package of paid, value-add services offered by Griffith University and QUT including:

  • Content advisor: an experienced industry professional will assist the YouTube creator to identify and access the facilities, resources, and advice needed to realise production objectives.
  • Scheduled access to studios and equipment to produce project content, including the film and television studio, green screen facilities, technical support FTV post-production suites and animation studio.
  • A dedicated student mentor/producer to help guide the YouTube creator through the QUT/Griffith studio systems.
  • Access to student crews.

Support packages will be tailored to the needs of each successful applicant.

Available funding

$30,000 (ex GST) is available per Established Creator. Flights, accommodation, and a daily stipend to cover food, ground transport, and incidentals in Los Angeles will be awarded to each Established Creator.

  • $10,000 (ex GST) is available per Emerging Creator.
  • Emerging Creator winners in 2017 will be eligible to apply for the established tier in 2018 if they obtain 30,000+ subscribers.

Who can apply

Any Queensland-based content creator who has a subscriber base of over 10,000 and is aged over 18 years old.

Application materials

Applications must be made through the Advance Queensland website and include:

  • contact details
  • YouTube channel URL
  • subscriber count
  • summary of proposed project, detailing the audience development and social media strategies to promote the series
  • a statement confirming your right to make the project, covering all copyright material to be used, e.g. music, artwork and stories.

If you are shortlisted to interview you may need to provide:

  • an outline production schedule
  • a production budget, describing proposed use of funds
  • an outline of the types of optional service you are interested in accessing via QUT/Griffith
  • an outline production schedule
  • a statement describing your YouTube track record, with links to notable videos.

If your application includes content or underlying material that has not been originally created by the applicants, then we also require any relevant chain of title documents, release or access agreements.

Evaluation criteria

Funding decisions will be made against the following criteria:

  1. The creative strength and distinctiveness of the proposal, including concept and entertainment value (30%).
  2. The potential of the project to expand the subscriber base of the applicant’s channel(s) and/or reach new audiences (20%).
  3. Opportunities for commercialisation by demonstrating the ability to incorporate potential brand(s) seamlessly into the narrative across multiple episodes (15%).
  4. The viability of the proposal with respect to the budget and scale of the project (15%).
  5. The track record of key participants involved in the proposal and the likelihood this program will demonstrably develop their skills in made-for-web content production (20%).

Evaluation process

Applications will be assessed by a judging panel compromising YouTube, Griffith University, QUT, Screen Queensland, and independent industry representatives, where required.

A considered strategy for social media and audience development to promote and market the content wider than the applicant’s current subscribers will be looked on favourably, as well as a plan for how to continue to build the channel.

Creators will need to demonstrate their availability to deliver this project and commitment to grow their channel as part of their application.

Decisions on applications are final. The Program Manager, QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, will advise applicants of the outcome of their application, in writing.

Terms of funding

Funding is in the form of a grant, which is 80% payable upfront and 20% payable upon completion of reporting and content obligations. Content must be uploaded, and a final report (incl. financials) submitted by 31 March 2018. In addition, a periodic report is due by 1 December 2017. Content will be expected to premiere on the content creator’s YouTube Channel for a minimum of 18 months.

QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, as Program Manager, will enter into an agreement with the successful applicants on behalf the Queensland Government.

Each creator acknowledges they are responsible for the rights to the project and understand they will be the lead contact for the duration of the contract.

In making an application to Creator Originals, the applicant agrees to provide personal information and provides consent for this information to be provided to third parties associated with the program for administration purposes only.

All successful applicants for both tiers are required to participate in a Creator Day event in Queensland within 12 months from the date the contract is signed.

The 3 successful applicants for the Established Creator tier must be able to travel to Los Angeles before the end of December 2017.

Established Creators may be considered for branded opportunities as part of this program by YouTube’s partners to support the growth of their channel.

Budget constraints: optional university spend (40% cap); director fee (10% cap); equipment purchase (not prescriptive - creators will work with university partner to determine appropriate funding allocation).

The successful applicant and production must comply with YouTube’s terms of service and community guidelines. Other terms, including delivery requirements, marketing and credit requirements for Queensland Government and YouTube, will be detailed in the funding agreement.
